Feasts of Israel - Redemption Celebrated Essay Example for Free

Feasts of Israel Redemption Celebrated Essay The Feasts of Israel written by Victor Buksbazen describes the reverent and celebratory tenets, which encompass the Jewish faith. A most interesting aspect of this book is how Buksbazen compares and contrasts Jewish feasts with Christianity. Not only does The Feasts of Israel describe the significance of each feast, it also proves the divinity of Christ in a plain comprehensible way. For example, in his introduction Mr. Bukzaben explains the logistical relationship between Christianity and Judaism in one sentence. When he said, Biblical Christianity is not a continuation of Judaism, but it is the logical outgrowth and consequence of adherence to Moses and the prophets (ii). Bukzabens first example of Christian / Judean reconciliation is apparent in his discussion of the Passover. Of course, many of us know what this feast symbolizes for the Jewish people, but how many of us realize the Christian aspect of it? To avoid the death angel, we know that the Israelites were told to prepare a lamb sacrifice, and then paint the doorposts and lentils with the blood. Those who followed this instruction are spared, their faith is proven, and they are worthy to be taken out from under the bondage of Egypt. Similarly, Christians are released from bondage and delivered to glory through faith in Jesus Christ the Lord. And, as the Lamb of God, Jesus blood pays the debt for those who believe in Him. Moreover, Bukzaben says, The deliverance of Israel from Egypt is the central point in Jewish history and worship, even as Calvary is the central point in the Christian faith (2). I found the Feast of Weeks especially interesting in how it is identified by differing titles and too, how each title was derived. Until reading this book, I didnt realize the significance of the Greek word Pentecost or that it meant fifty. According to Bukzaben, It was so designated because it was observed on the fiftieth day after the Passover Sabbath (14). Again, Bukzaben makes clear the relationship of Judaism and Christianity with this feast. This feast is also called Pentecost, because it was observed fifty days after the Passover. As Christians, we too celebrate the great feast of Pentecost, although, we can celebrate ours every Sunday. Pentecost for Christians began 50 days after Jesus resurrection, when God stamped his Commandments in the heart of each Christian with the power of His Holy Spirit. Jewish Pentecost celebrates the reception of Gods Law, and Christian Pentecost celebrates the provisional gift of knowing Jesus Christ. In short, Pentecost is the official beginning of the Church of Christ (Act.2, Joel 2:28-32, Jer.31: 33-34, Heb.8: 8-12). Therefore, as Christians, we too celebrate Pentecost; as believers we are baptized in the Holy Spirit, and it can speak to us directlyHe resides within us. Buksbazen makes further discovery of Pentecost in regard to the historical bond between Judaism and Christianity. With Ruth, he points out the ancestral connection she has to our Lord Jesus Christ. Moreover, Buksbazen explains just how reverently the Jewish people consider Ruth to be. On the Day of Pentecost the Jews even until the present day read the book of Ruth (18). Likewise, Christians love Ruth, her example of kindness, compassion, and love is a model of how we hope to fashion our lives. This mutual aspect is yet another binding feature between Jews and Christians. According to Buksbazen, They look to the day when Jew and Gentile shall worship God together through the kinsman Redeemer, Christ, typified by Boaz, the friend and husband of Ruth, his Gentile bride (19). As Christians we maintain hope that someday all of Gods children will come together as one to worship Him, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The book of Ruth and the example she shows to both Jews and Christians gives us this hope. Probably the most familiar of all Jewish feasts is Hanukkah. I have been aware of this Jewish feast for most of my life; however, not until reading Mr. Buksbazens commentary did I realize the richness of this tradition. The story behind this feast fascinated me, and praise God that the Israelites overcame their Greek attackers. For example, the candelabrum burning continuously for eight days, which may be regarded as a miracle, evidences God. More importantly, had the Greeks been allowed to defeat the Israelites, there wouldnt have been Jewish Apostles to bring the good news of our Messiah to us, the Gentiles. For that matter, we might not even have a New Testament or Christianity in the purest biblical sense of the word. Sure, the blessed traditions of Hanukkah and Christmas brighten our winter, but the significance is much greater than that. For me this feast represents the difference between life and death. Appropriately, Mr. Baksbazen titles the final topic with a discussion of Sabbath The Queen. For Christians, and Jews alike the Sabbath is probably the most comprehensive of all feasts. According to Buksbazen, The Sabbath is exclusively Israels heritage, given under the law to the people of the law (79). Moreover, a weekly Sabbath of worship is vital for both religions. Not only is Sabbath necessary for spiritual renewal, but it also lends to the survival of each respective religion. Mr. Baksbazen makes clear the distinctions between the Jewish Sabbath and the Lords day. For Jews the Sabbath is a memorial of their Exodus from Egypt. In general, Baksbazen explains that for Jews the observance of the Sabbath is law, but the Genesis story (Genesis 2:1-3) and the fourth commandment by God Himself (Exodus 20:11) show us that the Sabbath is a memorial to creation. Baksbazen summarizes the difference between these two religious aspects nicely. He states, The Sabbath is the crowning day of the week which rewards man for his toil. The Lords Day emphasizes what God has done for man through His only begotten Son (92). This means, if I accept Jesus as my Lord and Savior I most certainly would worship Him. However, just like accepting Him, worshiping Him is a choice I make voluntarily. In addressing the first Christians and the Sabbath question, Mr. Bukszaben explains what must have been heart wrenching for Jewish Christians back then. For that matter this situation exists even today. I see two tragedys occurring here, a split amongst one people, and a separation from God for non-believers. This is implied in Bukszabens introductory sentence, At first Jewish believers apparently continued for some time in the voluntary observance of the Sabbath, not because they felt their salvation rested upon this, but rather out of regard for the sensibilities of their own people (95). This practice during the early days of the church is evidenced in scripture (Acts 2:1; 3:1; 15:5; 21:20). I couldnt help but imagine the pain and sorrow new Jewish Christians must feel. Those who know the truth are torn between a steeped history of dogmatic law and worship toward the one true Lord. Mr. Bakszaben properly explains this situation, but it should be noted that Jesus himself did not break the Jewish Sabbath. Jesus activity may have broken Pharisaic rules, but not the law of God. Moreover, since Jesus was born under the law He lived under the old covenant requirements (Gal 4:4; Heb 4:15). In summary, the feasts are a representation of things to come, and Victor Buksbazens scriptural references provide the proof. I was enlightened, even surprised to see how the most important events in Jewish and Christian history commingled, and what the corresponding feast was originally a sign of. In addition, the way Buksbazen treated each topic (feast) with respect and contrasting each aspect with truth was refreshing. What I take away from this assignment is newfound knowledge and a better understanding of how Jewish people think. Finally, Buksbazen shows by example how we should be compassionate and loving toward nonbelievers. He treats each Jewish tradition with respect, but makes clear the true meaning of Salvation. We see this in the last few sentences of his book where Buksbazen writes, The Law of Moses has led us by the hand to Christ. Only one who has lived under the Law and has come to know the liberating power of grace, may sing (102).

Develop a brand that continues to catapult our company to the top of our industry, achieved through winning large, complex opportunities. History UCS is a woman owned business that was founded in 2000 by Mrs. Charu Dhumne and her husband Abhijit Dhumne with the mission of becoming a highly professional and trusted provider of business and technology solutions to the government and industry. Until 2015 UCS was a registered 8(a), minority owned, small disadvantaged business. In 2015 they graduated the Small Business Administrations (SBA) advantage program and now compete outside of the SBA programs. The 8(a) program offers a broad scope of assistance to firms that are owned and controlled at least 51% by socially and economically disadvantaged individuals and allows participants to receive sole-source contracts up to a ceiling of $4 million for goods and services and $6.5 million for manufacturing (U.S. Small Business Administration, 2017). The majority of UCS growth was realized under this program. UCS has consistently developed their quality programs and currently hold certifications for ISO 9001-2008, ISO 20000, ISO 27001 and CMMI Level 3 DEV. Conditions in Which the Organization Operates External. UCS currently operates as a mid-sized government consulting firm with limited to no protection or advantages afforded them as an 8(a) small, disadvantaged business which allowed them to receive direct contract wards without having to compete for them. The completion of the 8(a) has placed new economic challenges on the company in that they must now openly compete for work, or partner/subcontract with other small businesses under small business development programs, to gain new work or to retain current work as a re-award. Being located in the Washington D.C. metro area places even greater challenges as it is a highly competitive market for government contractors not just for work, but recruiting talent as well. This is in part due to higher wages and competitive benefits for highly sought after skill sets. Internal. UCS is structured as a typical functional organization which is one of the most common of the organizational structures (Galbraith, 2014) and are set up so that sections of the organization are grouped according to their purpose. Galbraith (2014) discusses how under this type of organizational structure companies divide out into sections and may for example, have a marketing department, a sales department and a production department. UCS is organized by functional and support areas. Under the support areas there is Operations (Administration, Human Resources, IT Management, Security, Facilities Management, and Contracts Management); Finance (Accounting and Payroll); and Business Development (Proposal Management, Graphics, and Marketing). The functional areas consists of client services grouped into Enterprise IT Services (Systems Engineering and Application Development, System Implementation, System Integration, Infrastructure and Operations, and Information Assurance and S ecurity Compliance); and Health Services and Solutions (Strategic Development and Performance Improvement, Advisory and Assistance Services, Portfolio and Program Management, Biomedical Services, Clinical Research and Development, and Health IT and Informatics. The structure is fairly straight forward and is a structure that works very well for many small to medium sized businesses (Galbraith, 2014). The senior leadership is comprised of the President, CEO, Executive Vice President, one support Vice President and three functional Vice Presidents. The culture is one of small business (family) but has recently been feeling the strain of growth and unclear guidance with the appointment of a new Executive Vice President. The workforce is one of diversity in characteristics and talents. The average age of the workforce is 32 (Ascentis UCS, 2017), of which the majority are located on client sites. Internal and External Analysis According to Burk (2014), in order for leadership to identify problems or issues impacting the organization they must understand the environment in which they operate and be able to analyze areas of strengths and weaknesses. Senior leadership and management teams must then determine how to respond to what the environment is telling them and how to establish a more effective alignment for their organization which can allow them to maintain or gain competitive advantages (Burk, 2014). External. One of the tools often used to provide such an analysis is one developed by Michael E. Porter of Harvard Business School, called Porters Five Forces of Competitive Position Analysis. It was developed in 1979 as a simple framework for assessing and evaluating the external environment by focusing on the competitive strength and position of a business organization (Grundy, 2006). Grundy (2006) states that Porters theory proposes that there are five forces which determine the competitiveness of an organization by helping to determine the strengths of an organization and their current competitive position. Identifying strengths of an organization may then be used to align the organization to its current direction or move in new directions. Analysts often use Porters five forces to predict whether a new product or service will be profitable and to identify areas to improve weaknesses and to avoid mistakes (Porter, 1980). The justification for the use of this tool is that it provi des an easy to understand method of analyzing some of the biggest areas of external impact on virtually any organization. According to Porter (1980) the five forces to analyze are: Threat of new entry: This is an analysis of new entrants to the market that may dilute the customer base and erode profitability. It also looks at the organizations durable barriers to entry like patents, cost of entry, and external factors like government regulations and policies, all of which can impact profitability. Supplier power: an assessment of how easy it is for suppliers to drive up prices. This can be driven by the number of suppliers for each product, the number of suppliers in an area, the size of the supplier, the uniqueness of their product or service, or even the cost associated with changing from one supplier to another. Buyer power: an assessment of how easy it is for buyers to drive prices down. Key factors here are; the number of buyers in the market or area that can dictate terms, the relevant importance of the buyer to the organization, the cost to the buyer associated with changing from one supplier to another. Competitive rivalry: This is an analysis of the number and capability of competitors in the market to determine how many competitors are offering the same products and services and their strength which could reduce market attractiveness to the product or service being offered. Threat of substitution: This is an analysis of products or services that exist in a market that may be close to what the organization is offering, thereby increasing the ability of customers switching to alternative sources in response to a price increase. This reduces both the power of suppliers and the attractiveness of the market. Applying Porters five forces technique to UCS would yield the following analysis: Threat of new entry: Given the market and location in which UCS operates (government contracting in the Washington D.C. area) there is constant threat of new entries to the market. These new entries have relatively low barriers in the form of cost due the service nature of the business. Most new start-ups begin by offering their personal knowledge and skills. Additionally, new entries to the market can most often take advantage of SBA assistant opportunities in helping to succeed in the market. The strongest barrier benefiting established companies is the bureaucracy (time it takes) associated with establishing/registering for certain credentials such as 8(a), Veteran Owned, Service Disabled Veteran Owned, obtaining and meeting security clearance requirements etc. Additionally, it takes time for new entries to build a reputation and past performances in order to expand their services. Supplier power: Suppliers abilities to drive up prices are relatively negligible in that the buyer drives the market more so than the supplier. However, that being said there are certain niche areas in the market such as the newest and hottest programing and development skills that the buyer is looking for and only specific competitors or individuals have, coupled with security clearance requirements, that can in fact drive up prices for talent and drive competitive recruiting/bidding wars for the individual talent to offer to the client. Buyer power: the primary client for UCS is the U.S. Government and as such is subject to extreme scrutiny in pricing as well as performance. Pricing is based on what the client/buyer determines to be fair and reasonable for the services requested. This accomplished through what is known as Independent Government Estimates and level of effort of services being requested. All of which are dependent upon the governments budget and funding levels that are being made available for the requirement. Additionally, the procurement strategy can also have an impact on the pricing (i.e. is the government looking for lowest price for technically acceptable bids or for best value of services based on what they receive for the amount bid). Competitive rivalry: For UCS this one of the primary concerns. The number and capability of competitors in the market are vast. Given that UCS is no longer under a SBA small business advantage program they must now compete with globally recognized companies such as Deloitte, Booz Allen, Northrop Grumman, CACI and more, all of which are offering the same services and have significant resources and brand recognition not just to the clients but to potential talent as well. Threat of substitution: Threat of substitution for UCS is significant due to the buyers ability to determine the procurement strategy and the requirements to assist small businesses in receiving government contracts. As such, the buyer could choose to accept a company that is technically acceptable but not as capable or proven as UCS in order to comply with the procurement strategy and check off their requirement to provide work to small disadvantaged businesses. Basically substitute a lesser qualified competitor in order to demonstrate adherence to procurement guidelines. Internal. My preferredmethod of analysis would be targeted surveys to collect data on areas where we are strong, weak or perceived threats. Burk (2014) discusses how psychologists have long relied on questionnaires for data collection, diagnosis and assessment of various studies. He goes on to discuss how leadership and Organizational Development are also leveraging this tool for data collection and has spawned what is known as the Organizational Survey Feedback Method. He also noted that when discussed the survey results with subordinates, particularly through group discussion, positive change typically occurred. The justification for use of this method is that it is a low cost, simple to use, customizable method of collecting a great deal of information. Additionally, once a survey is sent out, it sets an expectation and a responsibility within the organization for follow-up actions. However, for the purposes of this paper, it would be virtually impossible to conduct an organizational survey in time, so instead I would recommend getting much of the same data through the use of a SWOT analysis. Bradt and Davis (2014) discuss a SWOT analysis as a tool used to analyze the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats involved in a project, product or service venture, or the organization as a whole. It analysis the internal and external factors that can impact the objective being analyzed. A SWOT analysis can be used to help understand the factors that drive or hinder success in an organization and helps to think through potential scenarios to complete the question of so what? and set up the actions of now what? (Bradt Davis, 2014). This in turn can help get members aligned with the organizations vision and strategy and has been often used in executive brainstorming sessions. For UCS the SWOT Analysis must first define a desired end state or objective and in this case it would be to position itself to compete in a larger pool of competitors. The following will provide the basic analysis criteria as interpreted from Bradt and Davis (2014) and then followed by the specific UCS application. Strengths: These are characteristics of the business, team or individual members that give it an advantage over others in the industry. In the case of UCS the following would apply: Young energetic and dedicated workforce demographic. Ability to attract hard to find skill-sets. More organizationally flexible and able to adapt to change quickly. Focus on low overhead expenses allowing for better rates. Weaknesses: These are characteristics that place the firm at a disadvantage as compared to others and can include those found in business, team or individual. In the case of UCS the following would apply: Weakened communications from senior leaders. Inexperienced member in top leadership position. Lack of strategic focus on NEW clients outside of current client base. The start of disharmony among other senior leaders. Too much focus on biggest client which detracts from the many other clients. Fear of dedicating resources to potential new opportunities. Hyper-focus on reducing already good overhead costs, to the possible detriment of losing talent. Opportunities: These are external chances that can make greater sales or profits, improve market position or stakeholder perception. This can be applied to external from the team, business objective or members. In the case of UCS the following would apply: Use of senior business development leaders talents to open new doors outside of current client base. Rely more on experienced leaderships input to accomplish strategies and change. Be less risk aversive in going after new market segments. Threats: These are external elements in the environment that could cause trouble for the business. This can be applied to external from the team, business objective or members. In the case of UCS the following would apply: Hyper-focus of overhead cost reduction policy of making overhead personnel billable. Up and coming companies participating in the SBA small and disadvantaged business programs that can redirect contracts UCS is going after to direct (non-competitive awards to the smaller companies. Employee dis-satisfaction that can result in a damaged reputation thereby impacting recruiting and retention. Summary of Analysis. Review of the external and internal factors impacting UCS show that the company faces its greatest challenges from external forces and should be concerned with the new arena of competition it finds itself in. The loss of the SBA advantage programs significantly impacts the ability to gain new work or retain re-awards without a strong strategy to overcome the barriers it now faces. From the internal perspective UCS has some considerable strengths to leverage in its talented workforce, predominantly experienced leadership and ability to adapt to change. In its new highly competitive environment its ability to be lean and control overhead cost is an advantage and will allow them to be more competitive in pricing. However, while controlling cost is a strength, it can also be a weakness if cost reductions are at the risk of reputation, comfort and confidence of employees, and the ability to attract and retain the needed skills. Additionally, companies must grow and ac hieve new heights through controlled risk. By being overly risk adverse in order to conserve resources, a company may end up moving backwards instead of forwards. References Ascentis UCS (2017). Human Resources Automated Information System. Sectoral woes: Rising prices of raw materials and fuels, and sequentially, increasing wrapping and manufacturing costs. But the companies may not be able to pass on the full encumber of these onto the customers. Michel Porters Five Force Model http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQCqo8SyDfdR3pTZWlc2JNAeu_q5NdDJPSrL1hW3R9f-qEszGcc Threat of new entrants: The threat of entry depends on the existence of entry barriers and the attendance of new entrants to a food processing industry naturally bring to it new competence and the want to increase market share. The threat of substitutes exists most acutely when the price of a similar product in the marketplace go losing. As more substitutes become available, both the order for and the price of the products becomes more expandable. As the price for substitutes goes down, the manufacturer of the original product is prohibited from rising or required to lower its price. Smaller food processing companies often have difficulty obtain supermarket step autonomy for their products as large retailer charge for hole on their shelf and give precedence to the established companies who can pay for the advertising needed to produce high buyer command The nation is a major factor as if the company requirements to be a part in this food processing industry. It must be clever to face high costs for strapping competition. Moreover, the slow market growth rate for the food processing industry cause gaining between companies, resulted the barriers to entry are high with so many food processing companies and little to zero capability remaining for any more companies. The barriers to entry are obstacle on the way of possible new entrant to enter the market and complete with the incumbent. The difficulty of entering a market cans protection the incumbent alongside new entrants. Current profits are potentially higher than in a truly aggressive market, at the operating expense of their suppliers and buyers. The higher the barriers to entry, the more power in the hand of serving. Most important barriers: Capital requirements Government policy and regulations Customer channels Bargaining power of customers: Buyers are the people or organizations who generate demand in the food processing industry. Bargain power is capacity to pressure the setting of prices. Monopolistic buyer will use their supremacy to remove better terms higher profit margin at the expense of the sell. In a truly competitive market, no one buyer can set the prices. Instead they are set by supply and demand. Prices are set by supply and demand and the market reach the pareto-optimal point where the highest probable number of customers are content at a price that still allow for the supplier to be beneficial. The bargaining power of buyer is greater than: There are leading buyers and many sellers in food processing industry Product are consistent Buyers pressure to integrate backward into the food processing industry. Suppliers do not threaten to combine forward into the buyers industry. The industry is not a key supplying group for buyers, Consumers affect the food processing industry through their ability to strength down prices, bargain for higher products quality and services, and play competitors alongside each other. The bargaining power of buyers is high as there are huge tendency of new entry with new and diversity of products. Besides, consumers prefer choose products which offer lower prices. For example, Campbells soup products price is relatively 20 to 25% higher than generic brands in grocery stores, hence some consumers would choose generic brand products in the market rather than Campbells. Besides, the profitability obtained by the company is also determined by consumers. Food processing companies would be forced to lower prices if consumers believe that the prices are too luxurious as consumers be inclined to stop buying their products or button to supplements. Bargaining power of suppliers: Suppliers are the businesses that supply materials other products into the food processing industry. The cost of items buy from suppliers (e.g. raw materials, components) can have a major impact on a industry productivity. Suppliers may decline to work with the firm. Analysis of the determinants of qualified power between the manufacturer in food processing industry and their supplier is accurately parallel to analysis of the relationship between manufacturer and their buyer. The firms in the food processing industry that are the buyers and the producers of inputs that are the suppliers. The key issue is the case with which the firms in the food processing industry can control between different contribution suppliers and the comparative bargaining power of each party. Suppliers can involve the food processing industry during their skill to raise prices or decrease the quality of purchased goods and services. In case quality products the suppliers features an important factor. Due to the increase rate overall price of material has been significantly increased. Suppliers can also exercise authority on the players in a food processing industry. Supplier can grow bargaining power and can be possible threat to industry players in terms of food processing industry profits. They have the aptitude to increase or decrease the quality of products in a particular food processing industry. Supplier powerful: It is subject by a few companies and is more focus than the industry is selling to. Its product is exceptional or at least differentiates or if it has built up switching costs. The food processing industry is not an important customer for the supplier group. Threat of Substitutes Products: Those products that come from other industries and can create as a exchange for product in the fundamental food processing industry. In the area of expertise coffee industry, substitute products can be those non strong beverages such as tea, soft drinks, fruit juices and energy drinks and other caffeinated drinks. These are sources of substitute products which the customer can purchase in place of coffee. However, the only true straight substitute for specialty coffee is the basic coffee, but the basic coffee is careful to be a considerably minor quality than field an as such does not near threat to specialty coffee. The rivalry from firms of other industries which offer substitute products is strong as they are produce, supplying and serving the same food products that the food processing companies are. For example, Dunkin Donuts is in the foodservice industry and Campbell Soup Company is in the food processing industry. On the other hand, there are several possible substitutes; a cup of specialty coffee is still what consumer prefers to purchase. Product segregation and trademark icon plays an important role in this food processing industry. The field coffee product are different in many aspect from the substitute. Coffeehouses offer not only a cup of coffee but the incident of sipping the specialty coffee on a deluxe hotel. Soft drink companies and non alcoholic beverages producer are on bunch marketing, selling their product in sell stores, supermarket and departmental stores. Hence, the substitute products is not significant or is not careful a major force In the specialty coffee business, Rivalry among competitors: The rivalry among companies in the food processing industry i

Ozone :: Ozone Layer Oxygen Environmental Essays

Ozone Ozone (O3) is a molecule consisting of three oxygen atoms, similar to the oxygen we breathe (O2), however oxygen consists of only two oxygen atoms. In the stratosphere, a region high up in the upper atmosphere, light rays are responsible for the breaking down of oxygen (O2), breathable oxygen into its two separate oxygen atoms. Lone oxygen atoms are markedly reactive. When a lone oxygen atom comes into contact with a breathable oxygen molecule (O2) it combines to form ozone (O3). The ozone layer is a small residual amount of ozone concentrated in a band in the upper atmosphere. This band of concentrated ozone resides approximately between twenty and forty kilometers high in the stratosphere. The ozone layer reactions that both create and destroy ozone has come into a dynamic equilibrium. This dynamic equilibrium is very delicate and resulted during atmospheric formation (Environment Canada, 1996). Ozone, however, is very rare even in the ozone layer. Oxygen makes up approximately twenty percent of air and ozone makes up only 3 x 10-5 percent of air. Furthermore, this minuscule amount of ozone is enough to protect the earth from most ultraviolet light. Ozone prevents most UV-B radiation from reaching the surface of the earth (Environment Canada, 1996). Ozone is very important to life on earth because the harmfulness of high-energy UV-B radiation stems from the high energy of these light rays, enabling them to penetrate deeply into water, plant tissue and epidermal tissue of animals. Increased UV-B radiation results in harming the metabolic system of cells and ultimately damage to genetic material present in effected cells. Living organisms on the surface of the earth have always been exposed to some, and only slightly differing levels of UV-B radiation depending of geographic location and season. Through evolution, cellular repair mechanisms have evolved to safeguard cells against damage done by UV-B radiation. With the increase in the UV-B radiation, more damage is done to cellular functions then the natural protection system can deal with (Environment Canada, 1996). Life on earth would more or less be void if not for the formation of the ozone layer during atmospheric formation (Porter, 1996). With out the ozone layer the harmful UV-B radiation would not allow the growth of autotrophic plants, resulting in reduction in oxygen production; ultimately the destruction of most living organisms on the earth surface would result. Increased UV-B radiation has been linked to many incidence of increased health problems among humans. UV-B radiation leads to increase skin cancer, eye damage, and possible inhibition of the immune system (Health Canada). These incidence have been noticed in humans, and it is presumed that these problems will occur

Advanced Technology and the Society :: essays research papers

Advanced Technology and the Society Have advances in technology helped to create a lazy, detached society? The truth is it has. It becomes more and more advanced that the inventors do not even know what to do. They run out of ideas but they make a new one and then ten more come out of just that one idea. Advances in technology have helped to create a lazy, detached society because, people say: why do this if we have it all in our hands, everything is already there. People think it is cool to have all the gadgets that are new and advanced and easier to do things with, but it is actually making the society more lazy. For example, the society now has e-mail and instant messengers to commun- icate with, they do not want to write letters anymore, that shows that the society has become lazier. Since the society has this to help them communicate they send an e-card through e-mail rather than making a letter of their own. Also instead of driving down to a little family get together, the instant messenger gets in the way because it seems easier to communi- cate with. Another example, is that now a days the society has telephones, cellphones and even camera phones to help everyone communicate. When someone invites another person to a birthday party the person that gets invited makes up an excuse saying they can not go so they just call and say Happy Birthday. Also when someone wants to meet someone else they just text messages or call each other instead of going for a walk. These are some examples that really reveal how lazy and detached the society has became as technology advances.

One Laptop Per Child Essay

1.Why are Microsoft, Intel, and other leading for profit companies interested in low-cost computers for the developing world? In 2005, Nicholas Negroponte, the founder of MIT’s Media Labs, announced the One Laptop per Child (OLPC) program at the World Economic Forum. The concept was simple and appealing. Innovate a $100 laptop and distribute it to children in the developing world. No one can argue the power of getting kids access to computers/internet, and hence, access to a virtually limitless store of information, connectivity to the world and educational software. And for a technology optimist like Negroponte, the payoffs were obvious. But as the OLPC program has found out over the years, there is more to the success of Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs) in Education, than just handing out computers to kids, and expect it to works its magic on its own. To begin with, the premises and approach of OLPC program as articulated by Negroponte are fundamentally flawed. OLPC stipulates that laptops be owned by children over the age of six rather than by schools. Efforts to reform curricula and assessment are viewed by the program as too slow or expensive, and teacher training as of limited value due to teacher absenteeism and incompetence, so laptop implementation must proceed without them. The program also believes that in the end, â€Å"the students will teach themselves on how to use the laptop. They’ll teach one another, and we have confidence in the kids’ ability to learn†. The other flaw in this program is that the poorest countries targeted by OLPC cannot afford laptop computers for all their children and would be better off building schools, training teachers, developing curricula, providing books and subsidizing attendance. No one ever understood Nicholas Negroponte’s position when it comes to the $100 Laptop/OLPC/XO. While the idea behind creating a super cheap, super durable useful computer for children in developing nations is good, Negroponte has always approached the idea as one where only he should be allowed to see that vision through. When other companies decided it might be a good idea and wanted to target that market themselves, Negroponte flipped out and started attacking them for trying to undermine his project. In order to explore One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) and its mission to improve education in developing countries, it is necessary to first understand the nature of living in these countries. The UN’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights establishes health, food, and education as basic human rights, but people living in developing countries are deprived of these seemingly simple and obvious necessities. Founder of OLPC and MIT professor Nicholas Negroponte firmly believes that education is the solution and that children are the world’s most precious natural resource. Combining these thoughts, he founded OLPC in 2005 as a response to the educational needs of children in developing countries. At the 2005 World Economic Forum, he presented that a $100 laptop in the hands of every child would empower them to learn from and to teach each other. As CTO of OLPC Mary Lou Jepsen said, the â€Å"laptop is a vehicle to transform education around the world.† In order to bring this idea to reality, OLPC set out to design a laptop that would fit in the context of the developing world. 2.Do you agree with Negroponte’s decision to partner with Microsoft? Yes, I think it is a good initiative because now that the XO laptop will be available in both Linux and Windows varieties and we can view it as an opportunity for OLPC to expand in a couple of ways. Moreover, now it will have a broader acceptance in the community and the other is to have more software and software developers available. The OLPC’s philosophy of openness is behind its decision to allow Microsoft software on the machines, but it would be hard for OLPC to say it was ‘open’ and then be closed to Microsoft. According to Negroponte, the XP announcement is the latest development in a long-running collaboration between the project and Microsoft. Microsoft was also interested in this project and was working to see if it could get Windows XP up and running on the OLPC devices. To make it work, Microsoft needed to get the operating system to boot from an SD card and to create drivers to work with OLPC’s unique features, such as its touchpad and e-book reader mode. Negroponte said the ability to run Windows is a must-have in some countries. For example, he said, Uruguay made it a requirement in its recent solicitation. Even in other countries where Windows is not required, Negroponte said compatibility with the Microsoft operating system still helps give the laptop credibility. Meanwhile, Negroponte stressed that he is not giving up on Linux and ultimately aims to deliver machines that can boot into either operating system. There’s no premeditated plan that one is going to dominate over the other because both is a very powerful option. Though, there is obviously cost issues, which is necessarily higher for Windows, because it requires more hardware than Linux. Language support is possible for any community in Linux, but in Windows it depends on the good will of Microsoft, or rather the bottom line market analysis results that Microsoft works from. But according to Negroponte, he was mainly concerned with putting as many laptops as possible in children’s hands. 3.Assess the thinking behind the â€Å"give one, get one† promotion. Do you think this is a good marketing tactic? Yes, it is a good marketing tactics but it also brought about some drawbacks with it which is inevitable. Since, OLPC initially stated that no consumer version of the XO laptop was planned. The project, however, later established a website to accept direct donations and ran a â€Å"Give 1 Get 1† (G1G1) offer starting on November 12, 2007. The offer was initially scheduled to run for only two weeks, but was extended until December 31, 2007 to meet demand. With a donation of $399 to the OLPC â€Å"Give 1 Get 1† program, donors received an XO-1 laptop of their own and OLPC sent another on their behalf to a child in a developing country. Shipments of â€Å"Get 1† laptops sent to donors were restricted to addresses within the United States, its territories, and Canada. Some 83,500 people participated in the program. Delivery of all of the G1G1 laptops was completed by April 19, 2008. Delays were blamed on order fulfillment and shipment issues both within OLPC and with the outside contractors hired to manage those aspects of the G1G1 program. According to Negroponte, the Give One, Get One project was both successful and not. It was a great success because there are 162,000 XO laptops gaining support for the project in the U.S. However, he still would like to see more sold. In order to make the project viable, Negroponte says they will need to sell about three million devices. The program also aims to lower the production cost of the laptop to the original target of $100. The OLPC program has the correct intentions, but a flawed philosophy and approach. Just deploying technology and expecting to work its magic is not the way to go. For the diffusion of the technology, it is crucial that we adopt to the local practices and constraints.

Case Study Principles Of Management Education Essay

Introduction: Learning is a procedure. Learn mean know something freshly. It may get cognition, behavior and accomplishment. Human acquisition may happen as portion of instruction or personal development. Learning manners are a manner to assist better personal quality and accomplishments. This differs adult male to adult male. There are many learning manners ; ocular, logical, verbal etc. There are some theoretical accounts and manners in larning like as ‘TRAP ‘ theoretical account ‘VAK ‘ theoretical account and there are some known figures who presented their position for larning. As an illustration Kolb ‘s learning rhythm. Kolb ‘s learning rhythm: Kolb presented the following learning rhythm in 1984 which is called Kolb ‘s learning rhythm. Kolb ‘s experiential acquisition theory are today good known to faculty members, instructors, pupils, directors, and trainers and every bit good as others. Successively, Kolb ‘s acquisition manners theoretical accounts and Fundamental constructs towards our apprehension and explicating human larning behavior and towards assisting others to larn besides. He described larning system in two levels- a four phase rhythm and four-type definition of larning manners. Four phase rhythms is as below: Concrete experience ( making or holding an experience or CE ) Brooding observation ( reexamining or reflecting on the experience or RO ) Abstract conceptualization ( reasoning or larning from the experience or AC ) Active experimentation ( be aftering or seeking out what anyone has learned or AE ) And these four manners are the rhythm and that is every bit below:Figure: Kolb ‘s acquisition rhythmPage-3 ( hypertext transfer protocol: //www.ldu.leeds.ac.uk/ldu/sddu_multimedia/kolb/static_version.php ) Four-type definition of larning manners, ( each stand foring the combination of two preferable manners from Kolb ‘s manner, it is like a two-by-two combination, harmonizing mathematical matrix regulations of the four-stage rhythm manners, as presented below ) , for which Kolb used the footings: Converging ( AC/AE ) Accommodating ( CE/AE ) Assimilating ( AC/RO ) Diverging ( CE/RO ) ( hypertext transfer protocol: //www.businessballs.com/kolblearningstyles.htm ) Abstract conceptualization ( AC ) Concrete experience ( CE ) Active experimentation ( AE ) Converging ( AC/AE ) Accommodating ( CE/AE ) Brooding observation ( RO ) Assimilating ( AC/RO ) Diverging ( CE/RO ) We besides can stand for it as follows ;( Class talk and class stuffs )Active experimental – abstract conceptualization Active experimental – Concrete experience Brooding observation – Concrete experience Brooding observation – Concrete experience But this tabular array can be represent in many manner merely we have to administer Diverging ( CE/RO ) Assimilating ( AC/RO ) , Assimilating ( AC/RO ) and Accommodating ( CE/AE ) in different manner. And anyone can make that and explicate in his ain manner. Now we will hold a expression how these systems adaptable encephalon or people work or execute in practically. Converging ( making and believing – AC/AE ) – this is a practical and engineering based acquisition system. Peoples with meeting larning manner attempts to work out any job utilizing their acquisition and attempts to happen work out any practical issue. They like proficient jobs and their concern about people and inter personal facets is less. They are best at happening Page-4 Practical utilizations of theories and issues. They are most attracted to proficient undertakings and jobs apart from societal and interpersonal issues. They like to make experiment with new jobs and issues. Accommodating ( making and experiencing – CE/AE ) – The people who are with Accommodating larning manner, they are really active and relies on surmising instead than logical. They use analytical theories and practical attack to make any undertaking. They prefer new challenges and they are much planned. Peoples with an Suiting acquisition manner prefer to work in squads to finish undertakings. They set marks and actively work in the field seeking different ways to accomplish an aim. Assimilating ( watching and believing – AC/RO ) – The significance of absorbing is absorbing. Absorbing larning penchant is for a concise, logical attack. Their Ideas and constructs are more of import than people. They need a good clear account instead than practical chance. They excel at understanding wide-ranging information and organizing it a clear logical format. They ever prefer to garner thoughts knowledge. Peoples with this manner are more attracted to logically sound theories than attacks based on practical value. They are really of import for effectivity in information and scientific callings. Peoples with this manner prefer readings, talks, researching analytical theoretical accounts, and holding clip to believe things exhaustively. Diverging ( experiencing and watching – CE/RO ) – People with this manner are able to look at things from different positions. They are really sensitive. They prefer to watch instead than make, be givening to garner information and usage imaginativeness to work out any job. They are good at sing concrete state of affairss several different point of views. This is called ‘Diverging ‘ manner because these people perform better, in such state of affairss that require ideas-generation, for illustration, brainstorming. They are interested in people, tend to be inventive and emotional, and be given to be strong in the humanistic disciplines. Peoples with the Diverging manner prefer to work in groups, to listen with an unfastened head and to have personal feedback. Different acquisition manners are appropriate in different phase: Human existences are ever larning. In different age and phase people learn otherwise. When we were in school we learned in one manner but after that our acquisition system has changed. And there are some people who learn faster than the other in his same age and phase. So it differ age, phase, state of affairs. There are some people who learn merely by listening. This called auditory scholar. These people they attend any category ( pupil ) or seminar or meeting any where they learn best by listening. They are really sensitive to outside noise. There are some people who learn from optic. They are called ocular scholar. Basically they learn from assortment of coloring material and image or written information. They like to read instructions and conceive of about any topics or subject. They are besides be more sensitive to ocular distraction. Page-5 There is another larning manner named kinesthetic larning manner in VAK theoretical account. This is really physical learning manner. It is like when person traveling, walking, his/her sense is larning. These scholars learn from assorted motions. When they are on any motion they use to do notes. When they read something they scan it foremost and so they focus on it. So human being, they start larning when they are childs. And that clip they learn from listening and watching. But after a certain period they learn to utilize their encephalon. They learn how to speak how to walk. Then they go to school they start their academic acquisition. Person learn by analyzing, average memorising. Person learn from understanding. Briefly, any pupil, he attend the categories and dressed ore talks and he does non necessitate to analyze more to catch the subject. But on the other manus there is person who needs to analyze more than concentrating the talks. At last when they enter their occupation there is another state of affairs. Person can think what he has to make or non. Person needs to explicate everything point to indicate. But it depends how he learns. My learning manner: I can retrieve something a long clip as I have learned it practical. If I do non understand something I try all my best to larn it. But sometimes I can non. If I can hold a expression practically any theory, I can retrieve or use, Especially Scientific footings. But sometimes when I am analyzing something I do guess and seek to compare with any practical events. I think when I do it ; I can capture it really rapidly. For an illustration when I was analyzing in secondary degree, there were a scientific theory name ‘principle of Archimedes ‘ my instructor tried his all best to do it clear to me but he failed. So he shown me this in research lab how it does work and what was the rule. Still today I can retrieve this theory and I can explicate this. Sometimes I when I am in a new phase, I try to set myself with that state of affairs and comparison with some old state of affairs to happen out the similarities. Sometimes it happens but sometimes my thoughts go incorrect. On the other manus I have seen some people who can think something, they can understand anything immediately. But I can non make the same thing. There is person who can conceive of sing any jobs, subject, or undertaking but I ca n't make the same thing. When I think something I find out some critical thoughts where as some easy thoughts could be the best solution. I ever think something which is that solution what is effectual but non instant solution means this could be use subsequently but it is a possible solution of that job. So I think I have to alter this. Another thing when I learn something from person I ca n't catch everything immediately, when I review that so I can understand that. But I think I am better, when I teach something others. And I am reflector sometimes. It is because when I tech something other chap that clip I try to retrieve my lectors and their manner. Finally, I think I have to develop my thinking power, happen out some possible easy solution. Decision: As acquisition is a uninterrupted and lifetime procedure. So it really of import to holding thoughts about assorted larning manners. And there some people who learn otherwise. And there are some celebrated people, they contribute and presented their thoughts and positions on larning procedure. And nowadays Kolb ‘s manner is popular.
